Perry was born in Chicago to the actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. The character Jackie Harris was played by her mother in each of her two appearances on Roseanne. However, her parents did not permit her to perform until she turned an adult because of the effects stress would have on their daughter. Perry shy and shy for acting in school, began to perform in theater classes at Northwestern University because she wanted to make new acquaintances. Perry moved to New York, where she landed small roles in series like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Home sickiness caused Perry back to California and theater roles were available. Perry performed with her mom as part of The Other Place at Broadway the previous year. Kevin McKidd, her father Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prizewinning drama Anna Christie together with her in 2015. Perry was in nine episodes of the ABC crime thriller The Family in 2016. In 2017, Perry was a part-time character in ABC's political thriller Scandal in which her father was the main character. In the same year, she appeared as a younger character based on Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory) in which she played her mother in a youthful version. The actress was chosen for the role in spite of her strong family connection to the character.
